Sulphur Mountain II

On my first hike of the year, I eagerly got up at yet again another ungodly hour so I could trudge up Sulphur Mountain in the dark. I hoped to experience another beautiful alpine sunrise like my last one on Ha Ling. Although clear skies were forecasted, there was no sky to be seen during the entire hike. I glimpsed the faintest hint of golden glow on Cascade at one point, but that was it for the morning.
Despite the non-existent sunrise, I had a great time getting out and gulping down the crisp winter air on each step up to the summit. The temperature was surprisingly comfortable and the trail was completely packed down - it’s nice to just walk up to the top when you have to do it in the dark. Another thing I like about short sunrise hikes is getting home and still having most of the day ahead of you!

There’s something unbelievably magical about that still blue hour before the sun comes up. Being the only people on top of a mountain enhances the feeling.
The only hint of sunrise I saw that day was on the face of Cascade Mountain. See the adorable Tunnel Mountain in the foreground.
